Why The Color Run is the Happiest 5k on the Planet

We ran The Color Run this past weekend and I honestly can’t remember the last time I ran a race. The funny thing is I used to be a runner. I ran 5ks, half marathons, marathons. I ran almost daily, until I decided that I was over it and was tired of the pounding exertion on my body. It’s been a long time and The Color Run reminded me what I enjoyed the most about racing: the feeling of community. I love how everyone gathers at the start and is completely energized, that friends and strangers are taking pictures of each other, that people are warming up and getting pumped. I forgot how much I missed that.

I almost considered skipping it because Franco couldn’t go to bed until 10pm the night before and I thought, how is this 4-year-old going to wake up early and run a race? But we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to run the race in our own hometown. It took us 5 minutes to drive and park so close to the start. It couldn’t get any better, plus the weather was perfect.

The Color Run is the largest running series in the world (35+ countries) and the Bay Area race is in Alameda, CA. Here are some upcoming races:

  • September 15 NYC
  • September 23 Atlanta
  • September 29 Huntington Beach, CA
  • November 10 Phoenix

Sponsored by Nickelodeon, the race is family-friendly and non-competitive. Everyone wears white and at each kilometer, you get doused with a different color. I worried that Franco was going to get paint in his mouth or his eye, but there are volunteers at each station who are spraying you with a colored powder. They’re really just aiming for your clothes and I personally didn’t get too much powder on me. You have to ask for it if you really want to get doused.

We loved it and are making it a tradition. I highly recommend.
