Have you ever done a beach cleanup? I did one last year and after that, I stopped using plastic straws.
Our beaches are littered with all kinds of plastic particles. Next time you’re at the beach, bring a garbage bag and pickup some litter. You’ll see the destruction.
If you go to a restaurant at Pier 39 in San Francisco, you’ll notice they only offer paper straws. I told our waiter how pleased I was and he said, “No plastic straws around here. It’s not just bad for the environment, but the animals.”
Here are some sad facts:
- 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day in the U.S.
- By 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
I hope you’ll consider joining me in helping the environment with this one step: no plastic straws! Also, if a restaurant you patronize freely gives out straws, ask them to switch to a “straws on request” policy.

I am really trying to on the straw deal. I use them when I go out to eat because I have seen the condition on some of cups and glasses I have drank out of. I am asking if they use paper straws, sadly most places don’t.

What a pioneering restaurant! May all of them follow suit.
