2018 Best Lent Ever: Day 13: Cal Legacy

Yesterday was Cal day for me. I had a play date with two friends from college and our children, who range in age from 2 to 6 years old. Future Cal Bears! I dressed Franco up in Cal gear just for the occasion.

That night, I was invited to the UC Berkeley campus to celebrate Cal Legacy night, a networking dinner recognizing top students and alumni leaders. We started out with mocktails, which I thought was super cute since the students obviously aren’t of drinking age. Then dinner, where students and alumni were perfectly balanced, sitting student-alum-student-alum all throughout the rounds of tables.

I was in awe of the students I sat next to. The sophomore girl on my left was admitted as an out of state student from Maryland (impressive given how much harder it is to get accepted). She’s a cognitive science major who has interned at NASA and Congress. And she’s a resident assistant and gives campus tours.

The sophomore boy on my right is an international student who speaks Japanese, Mandarin and Cantonese. He got accepted into Haas Business School. Talking to them made me feel really good about our future. These kids are amazing. I wanted to give them all hugs. Keep on doing what you’re doing!

Finally, we were treated to an acapella performance by the student group DeCadence. One of the alums used to be part of the group, so they invited him up to sing along. They were great. I wish I had recorded it.

I found one of the songs online that DeCadence sang at the dinner.

Very cool. It is a strange feeling for a child to go to the same school you did. My daughter is graduating Cal-State East Bay in June. I graduated there when it was Cal-State Hayward. Hopefully your son will do the same at Cal.

I love the idea of continuing the legacy/tradition! And having insider knowledge that you pass down.
