Charlottesville: What You Can Do to Help

I have been grappling with the aftermath of the Charlottesville events and trying to figure out what I can do, what message I can provide here. I don’t want to be silent, yet I didn’t know what to say. My heart goes out to the local community, the University of Virginia campus, and its students. As an alum of another large state university, I feel a connection to UVa and offer my prayers.

Specifically, I have reached out to two groups targeted by white supremacists. Here is their contact information if you would like to do the same.

The University of Virginia Hillel

I highly encourage everyone to watch Brene Brown’s recent talk on white supremacy, privilege, power, and perspective. This is a great resource for us during this time. Please have a listen all the way through.

In my 40+ years, I have worked extremely hard to cultivate friendships spanning ethnicities, faith, and diverse backgrounds. I use this platform to showcase my own personal stories as well as others, resulting in the latest series on Trump and religion.

What resonated with me most about Brene’s talk is not to shame others when they are trying. When the Trump supporter I interviewed is trying to explain her perspective and her own story, just because she is a Trump supporter, let’s not automatically jump to find holes in her reasoning. Let’s instead listen, understand, and try to come from a place of love and understanding.

And lastly, make time for connection. I spent yesterday with my friend Ellisa who I had not seen in quite some time. We had the best time, catching up at lunch and playing like giddy kids at an art exhibit in San Francisco. Take a look here on my Instagram feed. Those smiles are 100% pure joy.

With love,

Catherine

I honestly am still at such a loss and grappling with my feelings and emotions on all of this right. So, all I can say is appreciate you and others sharing your humble and honest thoughts with me as it helps to here others takes on this. Hugs and again thanks for this and more. <3

I am going to donate to my daughter’s university Hillel – that’s a great idea, Catherine. I have no words of wisdom – I am just beyond horrified and sad that so many people hold these beliefs. But you and Brene are right – the (non-white supremacist) Trump supporter should not be ridiculed or shut down when they are trying to have civil discussions. We will get no where by closing our ears.

I’ve been so sick over it. Like the nightmares from my childhood are coming true. That said, this proactive and kind nature of yours is what should be spread.
    Thank you.
