Yesterday Dean and I dressed up for a rare night out: the San Francisco Ballet Gala.
I love the ballet and I’m so lucky that my husband enjoys it as much as I do. When I’ve brought guy friends to the ballet before, they always seemed to nod off. But our son will be different. I could feel him kicking up a storm during the performances last night. I can’t wait to take him with mommy and daddy to the Nutcracker!
The gala, which raised a record $2.4 million for the SF Ballet, kicked off the 81st season of the company–the oldest ballet company in the U.S. The dancers performed 12 pieces that give a representation of the repertoire for the season. It’s like watching the Best Of.

Looked like a perfect night Catherine and so glad you both got to go out for night. I have truly haven’t been to the ballet myself since I was a kid, but maybe someday I will get to go again, too 🙂
Catherine
janine, you have to take the girls to the nutcracker. they will be entranced!
Tamara
I haven’t been in years! I did nod off at a Broadway play once, which was highly embarrassing but it was after a late night/early wakeup. I am captivated by dancing, though. I’m loving the top photo of you!
Catherine
tamara, you’ll need to take the kids to the nutracker when they are old enough. i’m sure they would love it!
Roaen
Sounds like an amazing night! Isn’t feeling the baby kick inside you a pretty amazing and crazy feeling?
Catherine
yes this baby has been keeping me up at night, but i love it! it makes me so happy that he is making his presence known.
The Dose of Reality
Lucy dances so we’ve been to the ballet often. It’s so beautiful. I knew that I’d been raising Bobby right when we saw the New York City Ballet on our recent trip and when it was done he said, “That was amazing.” and he was able to talk about several parts. Most 13 year old boys would have probably complained about going, but not him!! 🙂 –Lisa
Catherine
your kids are keepers! it makes me so happy to know that kids are passionate about the arts. i was pretty surprised when i took dean to the ballet the first time, and he said he loved it and wanted to go back as much as possible.
AwesomelyOZ
That sounds beautiful! I definitely don’t take advantage of the ballets in my area and probably should – soon 🙂 I’m interesting in seeing Operas but my bf would probably nodding off indeed 🙂 Glad you guys had a blast, you look great! Happy Friday Catherine! -Iva
Catherine
i’m embarrassed to say that i’ve been to very few operas. you just reminded me that i should check out more, but they tend to be more expensive than the ballet. still…i gotta check it out.
Rachel
I love the ballet, and can’t wait to take Claire! We have a neighbor whose daughter is a ballet dancer and we took Claire to see one of her recitals. She was rapt! It was great. So great to here about you and your little BOY!
Catherine
rachel, i can’t wait until you take claire to see the nutcracker. i am sure she’ll be entranced!
Jamie @jforjamie
That is so sweet! I love going to the ballet, finding a man that enjoys it too is rare!
Catherine
jamie, we went to see a friend of mine perform in a choir at the crucible in oakland. it was AWESOME! we have so many wonderful art and cultural events here in the bay area to take advantage of.
CeCe @Pink Sunshine
I LOVE ballet. My husband is not a fan. He did go with me once but probably never again! What a fun night out. I would love to go to a gala especially if the dancers are there mingling.
Catherine
yes, cece, i was really surprised my husband loves the ballet. it is totally rare. even if he didn’t like it, i wouldn’t mind going to myself. for years, i used to have season tickets and would got dressed up for a solo date!
Savvy Working Gal
I haven’t been to the ballet in years. I’m adding it to my bucket list for this year. My husband would probably try it, if I picked the right performance. We went to an opera last year and he loved it.
You two look gorgeous BTW.
Catherine
if your husband liked the opera, then he would like the ballet! maybe something a little more modern and not too classical.
Patrick Weseman
I need to go again. The last time I went was about 20 years ago. I used to go the Nutcracker when the A’s players were the mice. They stopped that about 20 years ago.
You two look great.
Catherine
are you serious? i would have loved to see the nutcracker with the As. that is an unforgettable experience!
Kaye
I love your dress! So classy and feminine! And I also can’t wait to bring my kids or loved ones’ kids to the Nutcracker.
Catherine
that dress is from asos, which is my favorite online clothing store. free shipping both ways. free returns. i love the nutcracker. i went for the first time since i was a kid, and forgot what a beautiful production it is.
Jean
You both look lovely!
Did a miss a post on the gender of your child?
Catherine
jean, we haven’t found out the sex of the baby (nor will we), but i just have a feeling it’s a boy so i refer to him so!

How fun! I love the ballet and how lucky that you have someone to share it with. I have heard wonderful things about the San Francisco ballet. Its on my bucket list. You look stunning btw!
Catherine
the sf ballet really is tops, i’m so glad it’s on your bucket list. specifically, i like the modern performances better than i do the classical.
Britt@MyOwnBalance
I love the ballet! I need to go more often! You look so pretty!
Catherine
thanks britt. yes, going to the ballet is such a luxury. we try to catch at least 1-2 performances a year.
Charlotte
You guys look so great all dressed up! Love these photos and love that you are patrons of the arts 🙂 XOXO
Catherine
thanks charlotte! i figure, if we live in the city, we gotta take advantage of what it has to offer. otherwise, what a waste!
