It took me a week to recover from food poisoning. I only managed to eat a few bites at every meal, and all the fatigue of my first trimester came back to haunt me. I went to bed by 9pm every night and woke up at 7am. The whole week was one big daze.
So here’s the update.
I’m exactly 17 weeks and 2 days along in my pregnancy.
Apparently, the baby is the size of an iPhone. Imagine an iPhone 5 swimming around inside of you.
The food poisoning set me back 5 pounds. I was tracking along at a pound a week, but now I’m back down to 95 pounds, for a 10 pound pregnancy gain. I’ve got some catching up to do!
I’ve got a rash all around my tummy. A rash or blackheads or bumps. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it’s gross and extremely itchy. I’ve got acne on my face, my chest, and all over my back. I’m constantly scratching myself.
As much as I love this time of year, I haven’t been able to enjoy it much. Someone snapped a picture of me and Dean in the middle of SantaCon in Union Square when we were on our way to another holiday event. Don’t I look a little green?
My poor hubby was only in town for 36 hours. He’s traveling again for work, but will be back at the end of the week. Sigh.
Have you ever had food poisoning?
What calamities did you suffer during pregnancy?
Have you ever participated in SantaCon?

Still sending you great thoughts for the health of your child.
Graet pic.
If I eat anykind of seafood, I go into anaphylactic shock. I guess you can call that food poisoning.
Catherine
oh no, patrick. i had an ex who was allergic to shellfish. steak and burgers for you!
JAnine Huldie
I had food poisoning once right around New Year’s a year before I got pregnant with Emma. We had gone to a fondue place for a friend’s birthday party. I believe I had uncooked meat and later that night was so sick I could barely stand and no joke I couldn’t look at food for days after that. Couldn’t even imagine being pregnant and being this sick though and seriously my heart goes out to you, because with both my girls I had terrible acid and nausea from about 6 weeks all the way up to up 21-22 weeks of pregnancy. I never throw up but kind of wish I had and could have felt better, because the all day nausea just was the worst in my book. Feel better and seriously sending good thoughts and vibes your way!!
Catherine
janine, what’s ironic is that i used to think that food poisoning was an excuse like “my dog at my homework.” i have such a stomach of steel, i’ve never had issues. then here we go with food poisoning and i’m like, “i get it, i get it! i was wrong, yes, food poisoning is a real problem!”

I feel like food poisoning combined with pregnancy is a special kind of hell. Thank goodness you have rounded the bend! Now, are y’all doing an ultrasound soon to find out the sex or are you going to be surprised?-Ashley
Catherine
ashley, you are the first online friend to know that we did our radiology ultrasound yesterday and the tech told us to turn away because we want to be surprised. i know it’s weird as i’m also a big planner, but i’ve always wanted to be surprised. i think it’ll build up so much excitement for when i’m suffering from labor pains.
Kate
You both look happy even if you aren’t feeling well! I haven’t had food poisoning and can’t imagine having it while pregnant- so glad you’re on the mend!
Catherine
kate, believe me, i hope you never get food poisoning.
Ferly | Gifts We Use
First thing I thought when I saw your photo was your eyes look tired {poor thing}, but your smile is still lovely! Glad to hear that you’re on the upswing and hope you begin feeling like yourself again soon.

Catherine
thank you ferly, i’m finally all better. i am trying to catch up on non-work related stuff plus all the christmas planning…so i’ll be spending the day trying to be productive.
Dana
I’ve never had food poisoning, and I’m glad you have recovered – sounds like it was horrible. My pregnancies were not too bad – pretty constant nausea for the first trimester with both kids. I almost passed out while standing in line at the food court at the mall – be careful about standing still for too long. That always made me light headed. But overall I loved being pregnant – I hope you do too now that the food poisoning is behind you.
Tamara
When I was pregnant with Scarlet, I went to the mall on the Saturday before Christmas in my first trimester! I started blacking out while buying my sister a “Thriller” album at Hot Topic. True story. I managed to make my way to a bench and my mom got me cold water.
Catherine
yes dana, i also cannot stand for long periods. i think i’m fine now, but during that first trimester, i was just a dud!
STEvie
17 weeks, woo-hoo! You go little baby! I have never had food poisoning but if it’s anything like the flu, it must be awful. I think you look happy and very natural. Maybe a bit tired but who wouldn’t be?
Catherine
stevie, i’m all better now and 18 weeks! woot! not yet the half-way mark, but slowly plodding through. apparently this baby is moving a lot (according to the technician who performed the ultrasound), but i don’t feel any of it. my OB said i shouldn’t feel anything until 20 weeks.
Tamara
I’m glad you’re feeling better. I had food poisoning once from mall food court Chinese food in New Jersey. Doesn’t that just sound like food poisoning waiting to happen? I was supposed to go to a party in Brooklyn and let’s just say I skipped it. The poisoning hit me while I was still at work and I barely made it home. It wasn’t the vomiting kind but it was certainly food poisoning. (TMI?)
And your baby is the size of a phone! That’s kinda big!!
Thanks for the update!
Catherine
tamara, you crack me up. chinese food at a food court…food poisoning waiting to happen. food courts actually strike me as pretty regimented and clean. ironically this place that i think i got food poisoning is super organic with a menu that changes daily. i was quite surprised, but you never know what may have happened with the produce, etc.
Kathryn
You look great! Stopped by to see how you are doing. Sent you an email a few weeks ago. Glad you are doing well! 🙂
Catherine
kathryn, i’m so sorry, yes i owe you an email. i am contending with 200+ email messages…i’m not kidding and hope to get in touch with you this weekend. i’ve pretty much been out of commission, just trying to manage at work, so i have been watching my email steadily grow out of control.
Kathryn
No Worries, just glad your okay!
CeCe @Pink Sunshine
I’ve never had food poisoning. Sounds awful! Clearly you did not need that at this time (or ever really). Glad you are bouncing back. And that your iPhone baby is doing well. : )
Catherine
thanks cece, i am really enjoying your vacation pictures!
Savvy Working Gal
You do look a little green in the photo. Glad to hear both you and the baby are doing well. I recommend loading up on holiday goodies this year to gain some of your weight back. Too bad Dean has had to travel so much.
Catherine
yes, i am all for holiday goodness. my mom is making all my favorites for christmas so i’m sure to balloon back up!
Michell
OH NO!! You poor thing!! Food poisoning is NO JOKE, especially when you’re pregnant!! So glad you’re feeling better Catherine!! Yes, I had food poisoning once! I ate a chocolate cake that was obviously molded! Ewww, yes molded! Let’s just say that I was bedridden for 4 days. I couldn’t look at food. This was seven years ago. I just ate my first piece of chocolate cake about four months ago…IKR! Anywho, so glad you’re feeling better and the little one is doing great as well!!
Catherine
oh no! mold in cake?! that sounds awful. and i hear you about staying away form chocolate cake for so long…although i’m not sure i can have your stamina when it comes to cake. i am such a sugar fiend michell!
Michelle
I’m glad you’ve recovered!! No food poisoning here, but I had placenta previa with my first and I had to stop running at that point. I ran through most of all 3 of my pregnancies. 🙂 Sending lots of good thoughts your way!!
Catherine
michelle, you are so active! i love that you were able to run with your pregnancies. it’s so good both emotionally and physically. i’ve become one big couch potato 🙂
Mo at Mocadeaux
An iPhone, eh? Amazing! I’m so glad to hear that you have recovered from the food poisoning. Sorry that you are plagued with other pregnancy maladies. Hang in there, rest and take care. Sending warm thoughts from freezing cold Boston!
Catherine
yes it took a week, mo, but i’m all better now. hopefully i will feel this good for the rest of my pregnancy. i do feel like i have a lot of energy now.
Rachel G
I’ve had food poisoning–but never that lasted for a week!! That’s really rough! Hope you are getting your strength and energy back!
Catherine
rachel, all better now! thanks for checking in. hope to be more actively blogging and reading blogs!
Melissa
Glad to hear you’re on the mend and little B is growing and staying strong! I’m worried though to hear about your rash on your tummy. Is it still there? A friend of mine years ago got scabies on her belly while pregnant from everyone rubbing her belly. It’s extremely itchy and has a black dot in the middle of the bump. The doctor will be able to prescribe a creme to apply and get rid of it.
I got food poisoning once from Taco Bell, pretty sure it was the sour cream. Luckily it only lasted 24 hours but I literally stayed and slept in the bathroom. I was so traumatized by it I swore Taco Bell off for about 4 years, lol!
Sending continued well wishes your way.
Catherine
melissa, thank you for checking in on me! i had an appointment with my OB yesterday and she took a look at my rash. she kinda shrugged and said that i could put cortisone on it if i wanted to, but that absolutely it was not harming the baby. that’s all i care about it. i can stand the itchies as long as the baby’s ok!
as for taco bell, not sure if i could swear that off for 4 years even with a case of food poisoning. haha! their soft tacos are just so yum.
Amber Day Hicks
SO glad to hear you are feeling better! I’m hoping to hear you put so weight on soon… if it makes you feel better I weighed 128lbs when I delivered K at 7.5months… 🙂 & I gained my weight between months 5-7.5….
Catherine
amber, i am doing my best to put the weight back on. i truly am a garbage disposal so this shouldn’t be hard!
Alison
Woo hoo! Seventeen weeks, Catherine! Way to go. Your little iPhone is making progress! So sorry about the food poisoning; glad it’s over. Can only imagine how horrible it was, love. We continue to pray!
Catherine
alison, you are a rock of a friend. thank you for your prayers!
