Book Review: Nefertiti

It seems like I do a lot of reading on the plane – it’s what keeps me occupied. Not really one for movies or shows unless they’re good. I watched an episode of GCB on my Virgin flight. Is that still on the air? It was terrible.

I started and finished Michelle Moran’s novel Nefertiti while commuting from SFO – JFK – SFO. It’s historical fiction so the whole time I’m reading it I’m wondering what Ancient Egypt was really like. Did the author get it right? Was her research that good? Or is there even enough evidence for us to know how that time period played out.

The narrator is Nefertiti’s younger sister who characterizes the reign of Nefertiti and the diabolical pharaoh. Crazy stuff goes down: polygamy, murder, poisoning, the plague. I felt like I was reading one very long mythology story. Good book, quick read.

It’s a book club choice so I’m curious to see what we’ll discuss since the narrative doesn’t have a lot of depth. I’ll have to do more research on the historical significance.
