I’m sure you’ll find this strange, but Dean and I have a fascination with meerkats. We have a replica of a meerkat underneath our living room table. Often times Dean calls me Flower, the same name as the dominant female in the show Meerkat Manor—a documentary that depicts the real life story of meerkats and their families trying to survive in the African Kalahari Desert. It is addicting, but the type of addicting that I’ll carve time out for. We’ll spend a night watching two episodes that are each 20 minutes long. Quick, educational, and dramatic. We’ll cheer for the Whiskers family, scream warnings at the young when a snake is nearby, and get pretty bummed when our favorite meerkats meet their demise. This show is fascinating! I was surprised to learn that females vying for dominance will cannibalize babies that are part of the family, but are not their own. In other words, an older female meerkat will kill her sister’s newborn babies. Sadistic!
