I saw on Facebook and Twitter feeds this uproar over a white UCLA student’s rant on Asians. It had gone viral. Naturally, I checked it out, expecting something vile. Wow. And I mean ‘wow’ as in–what is the big deal? There was no screaming, no cussing. Anyone recall Mel Gibson, Christian Bale, or Charlie WINNING Sheen? And her little tirade, shy of five minutes, is labeled a rant? That was no rant.
Insensitive? You bet. But not vindictive. Watch it again if you think she’s evil. Instead, she sounds immature and clueless. Very clueless since she made the poor life-changing decision to post the video on YouTube.
Racist? Of course, but aren’t we all? Aren’t comedians constantly making racist jokes to large audiences. Everyone laughs. Yet, those comedians are not receiving death threats? In fact, those jokes are welcome. We welcome them with our laughter. They draw even larger audiences. Come on people. Isn’t that a wee bit two-sided?
And aren’t we laughing because those racist jokes are true? This girl talked about her apartment complex and how hoards of Asians come on the weekends to cook and clean for their kids. Yeah, that’s me! I was completely dependent on my mom to do my laundry in college because I was a spoiled whiny Asian brat.
I’m not up in arms over her supposed rant. She happened to be vocal in a hyper-sensitive, ultra-politically-correct environment. Most people harbor racist thoughts, but never say anything. Just because they don’t say anything doesn’t mean they’re not just as racist as she is. I feel badly for her.
Face it, we are all racist. Anyone watch Avenue Q? There is a song called Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist. We should all laugh and let these negative thoughts go!
