Bonus

My boss asked me to come into his office and close the door.  “You’re going to see these numbers in your paycheck tonight so I figure I might as well tell you in person.”

“Bob, are you going to lay me off?”

“Uhhhh, hmmmm, I hadn’t thought about that….No!”

He announced my bonus figure and my percentage increase in my salary at which point I started to get teary-eyed.  “Oh Bob.  I can’t believe it.  Thank you.  Thank you so much.  This is so generous given everything that’s going on.”

“Catherine, you deserve every penny.  You work so hard.  I wish I could give you more.  Now skedaddle.”

I expected nada, zip, zero.  In my dreams, I heard my manager say, “Your bonus is that you get to keep your job.  Capeche?”

So with this infusion of cash, I’ve been wondering what to do with it.  Obviously, I need to be careful because who knows if I’ll get anything next year.  But still, I want to treat myself.  Last year, I paid for the matchmaker.  This year?  I don’t know.

I’m definitely going to give my parents some gift money and do a donation-match for my high school.  But really, I can’t think of anything I’ve been wanting.  Probably will sock away the money for vacations and more writing classes which are pretty pricey when you add them all up.
