Sorry I didn’t write yesterday, Ash Wednesday and the start of the Lenten season. For the first time, I went to church during the work day. I usually go really early before work or afterwards. This year, I went to Old St. Mary’s on California and Kearny just two blocks up from work. It was jam-packed. I didn’t realize there were so many Catholics in the Financial District. I’d never been to that church before and there were people hanging from the rafters of the second floor balcony—intensely crowded. And there was only one entrance and exit at the back of the church. No side entrances. So it was complete chaos during communion and when they distributed to ashes. Total bum-rush to get the ashes and get out, back to work. Kinda funny seeing a crowd of people with black marks on their foreheads spilling out into the work world. It’s probably the only time of the year when you visibly express your religion at work. And I was surprised when three separate individuals stopped me on my way back, asking where I got my ashes so they could go too.
Remember I gave up negative thinking so if ever you catch me saying anything less than warm and fuzzy, go ahead and slap me silly.
