Over the weekend, this unnamed girl gave me shit about my expensive coat. Instead of slapping her into 2008, I figured I’d blog about it. Maybe it’s about justifying it to myself more than anything else.
Why I deserve to spend a small fortune on a single article of clothing:
I worked three jobs and paid for college on my own.
I paid for grad school on my own.
I’m saving by not living in NYC.
I drive a car that’s completely paid for and will last me until 2015.
The coat will last me until 2015 and outlive me.
I did not spend a fortune on a wedding.
I don’t have to spend on daycare or put a kid through private school.
I never spent money on a flat-screen TV or monthly cable.
I eat Lean Cuisines on sale at $2 a pop for lunch and dinner.
I ended my gym membership.
I don’t have to travel or spend on airfare during the holidays to see my family.
I do not dye or straighten my hair, or otherwise spend a fortune getting it cut.
I do my own mani/pedi. (New for 2008)
I bought a place a block away from the projects with homeowner’s dues of $100/month (average is $300-400).
I switched to Geico.
It’s something to love in lieu of my puppy.
It’s my Christmas and birthday present for the next few (maybe two) years.
It’s fur.
It’s fabulous.
It’s timeless.
I’m shredding the receipt tomorrow to end the qualms about returning it.
