Book Club

My friend and I started a book club this year and I must say it has been extremely successful. It started out with a core of six–most of whom are my college friends–discussing the book over a nice home-cooked meal. There are about 10 of us now…all female. A guy friend asked if the book club was exclusively for females and I didn’t know how to respond. I guess I’d have to bring it up to the group.

With set deadlines, I’m pressed to finish a book whether or not I have the time. I think that’s what I love the most about it…that I absolutely have to finish whether or not I’m busy or have the time. I don’t want to be the only one who hasn’t finished nor do I want the ending to be ruined.

I also feel like I’m part of the over-achievers book club. We read some pretty hefty books in short timeframes. I was discussing book clubs with a teacher I met and he said that they do best when the books are less than 200 pages. I feel like our books are super long!

So far, here is our repertoire:
The Power of One by Bryce
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Niffenegger
Norwegian Wood by Murukami
Middlesex by Eugenides
The Shadow of the Wind by Zafon

I’ve actually liked them all with the exception of The Time Traveler’s Wife, although that book was a great book club choice since there was a great deal of debate. People either loved it or hated it. We’re reading The Shadow of the Wind right now and I’m completely engrossed. I’m not too far into it and I absolutely love it.

I’m also hosting the next meeting which means I have to cook. Gadzooks! It will be my first time cooking for a big group. Wish me luck.
