In layman’s terms…
I started my new position this week, probably the most difficult week because of earnings. Long, long hours made me a tired, Ambien-popping, junk food-devouring grump. I’m still overwhelmed and have a lot to learn, but the anxiety has eased up.
What surprises me most about the move is how easily and happily I adapted. The environment is completely different. It’s more conservative, my co-workers are much older, the work space is dreary. But I like it just as much as my previous position. It’s very odd. I guess it’s the Gemini in me. Both sides of the brain-type thing.
Here’s a glimpse of the change. I went from: wearing jeans everyday to dry-clean only pants and button-down tops, open-space work environment to cubes, endless supply of snacks and soda to daily Starbucks runs and vending machines, IBM Thinkpad T41 and Windows XP to a piece of shit Compaq and Windows 2000. But still, I love it. The people I work with are knowledgeable and friendly. And most importantly, my boss is amazingly nice.
I’m enjoying it a lot so far, trying to learn as much as I can. Will be studying with flashcards tonight!
