As a child of immigrants, I grew up a little hard-pressed for money. My lack of cash (or even access to it) was made apparent when I had to pay for my high school cheerleading uniform. The custom-made top and skirt, designer socks with the school mascot emblazoned on the side, shoes, and pair of pom-poms totaled over $400. My parents who worked tirelessly to send me and my sister to private school weren’t about to hand over a dime. To this day, it pains my mom to eat out at restaurants. I was pumped to write a rave review about a Hyde Park restaurant I patronized last Sunday. My sister’s boyfriend, who was in town for a medical conference, was kind enough to take the shuttle from O’Hare to Hyde Park to meet me for the first time and have brunch.
