The Weekend in List Form

Saturday

Slept in. This is a luxury I cannot fathom giving up. I have been sleeping in on weekends since I was born. I remember talking to a friend about how I sleep in until around 11am almost every weekend and he said, “What’re you like 16 years old?”

Hung out with friends and their twins. Dean’s really good with kids. I think they think he’s one of them, but just super tall.

Got car tires changed. My mechanic, the Toy Shop on Geary, is the best. If you own a Japanese car, get your car fixed at the Toy Shop. Very good at what they do, and honest with reasonable prices. I love the guys there. The only thing they don’t do are tires so we had to get those changed elsewhere.

Watched the new Skyfall movie. Entertaining. Can’t say it’s the best Bond flick ever, but pretty good. I think it’s been hyped up so much, I was disappointed.

Dinner at Mr. Pollo. I will review in another post.

Sunday

Slept in

Got my toe nails painted. Cut my own nails, filed them, then went to the nail salon across the street and had them do a french paint.

Drinks at the Phoenix. The Mission is now fully packed on the weekends. We went to 3 places in a row and there wasn’t any place to sit.

Dinner at Mission Chinese. Still, hands-down, one of my favorite restaurants in the city. Last weekend, I went to Chinatown and ate at Great Eastern which is the restaurant Obama got take-out from. I swear to God I gained 3 pounds when I weighed myself the next day. What a waste of calories, the food wasn’t even good. But Mission Chinese is good Chinese food, not that crappy stuff they serve in the bowels of Chinatown. After gorging on Mission Chinese, I weighed myself the next day bracing myself for another 3 pound gain and I swear to God I lost 2 pounds. Who loses weight after eating Chinese food? Mission Chinese–best diet ever.

Drinks at Beauty Bar. The place has turned into a major decrepit dive. Wow, won’t be going back there again.

Wine at a friend’s house. Can’t go wrong drinking wine with a friend who has hundreds of bottles at his home.

Counting the Days until Friday January 20th

I have nothing to write about because I’ve been in a bad mood. I worked last weekend, I’ll work again this weekend, and I’m working Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. What fun eh?

I’ve come to realize how much I live for the weekends. I’m so overworked that we’ve got to get away the following weekend, but we’ve already committed to seeing people. I need a vacation!

It’s ironic I wrote about being offline in my last post. I certainly have been offline. No Twitter, limited Facebook, no podcasts. What is going on in the world? Mitt Romney, Iran sanctions, and my favorite Tebow.

Yeah I’m jumping on the bandwagon. You know why? Anyone who was born in my parents’ homeland, does missionary and orphanage work in the Philippines, and happens to be unbelievably humble…well he is a rockstar in my eyes for sure. People either love him or hate him, but honestly cannot understand why people hate him so much. There are rumors that he broke up a marriage. Ummm, rumors, people. Affairs never stopped us from supporting Clinton. Am I right? Or maybe they hate him because they think he’s a righteous, Bible-toting prick? Ummm, I don’t see him condemning anyone or being preachy.

I think it’s really sad when people who are strong enough to be vocal about what they believe in, get verbally abused by others who don’t agree. Poor Kelly Clarkson started a Twitter hate fest when she tweeted that she supports Ron Paul.

Cannot believe how far Tebow has taken the Broncos. Incredible! I love you man! God bless.

Memorial Day Weekend – Wine Country

I dream of YFC – Yountville Fried Chicken, Ad Hoc’s famed fried chicken cooked every other Monday and booked several months out. A coworker of mine has taken at least two half-day Mondays off work to head north in advance of horrific I80 traffic. I’m not one to take time off for a special meal in a location I frequent often, at a restaurant I’ve already eaten at three times, but the Memorial Day holiday beckoned with no travel plans except for local jaunts. Time for YFC! Like I mentioned, Ad Hoc was completely booked when I called, but the hostess offered 10 open seats at the bar. I quipped with an eagerness so not appropriate for a cubicle environment, “Oh yey! We’ll see you Monday at 5!”

Everything else I planned for our Memorial Day wine country excursion was secondary. First, a shocking $40 reserve tasting at Pine Ridge. The wines were so smooth and silky, but at $40 a tasting, I kinda expect that. Next up, and I mean way up as in a two mile rugged ascent past the security-coded main gate was Kuleto. The owner is the restauranteur who started McCormick and Kuletos, and apparently owns Boulevard, Waterbar, Epic Roasthouse, Jardiniere, Nick’s Cove, among others. The tasting fee was $35, still pricey, but includes a tour of the grounds including bunny rabbies and cheese pairings. Well worth the view atop Napa Valley. Lastly, we popped into Hopper Creek in downtown Yountville and discovered a lively frat-house environment complete with the Giants game on TV, a life-sized Elvis, and charismatic Marcus pouring wine from behind the bar. So refreshingly different. Yey for Hopper!

We were having such a blast, we didn’t get to Ad Hoc until 4:50pm and I almost shit a brick when I saw the line wrapped around toward the parking lot. Dean comforted, “We can always go somewhere else.”

“NO!” I screamed. “This is why we came. I am not leaving here until we get fried chicken, I don’t care if we have to wait.” At 5pm, they started letting people into the restaurant and we noticed several groups had reservations. Not sure why you were waiting in line if you already have a reservation, but whatever.

When we got to the hostess table, she smiled, “Two last seats over there at the bar.”

5 stars for the fried-to-perfection chicken that had been specially brined for several days. Step aside Wayfare Tavern, your overpriced chicken nuggets don’t even compare. Ad Hoc’s accompanying velvety mashed potatoes and fresh crunchy greens were just as good. But the rest of the menu, not so much. The cheese plate, kind of a waste. The ice-cream sandwich, that was pathetic. Still, I would highly recommend lining up early on the next Monday holiday (you have to check to make sure it’s a Monday they’re serving fried chicken) and getting in on some of that tasty YFC action.

Memorial Day Weekend – Big Sur

Damn, isn’t California gorgeous? We didn’t board a plane or change time zones. We got in my trusty Honda Civic and drove two hours to Big Sur on Saturday. Look at that rugged coastline, the marine-blue water, the greenery, that waterfall! Click on the second picture to see the picturesque waterfall (or any of them to enlarge and see the detail). We really do live in the prettiest state.

After hiking, we treated ourselves to drinks at Ventana and Post Ranch Inn. Very posh. But the chic grounds pale in comparison to Big Sur’s natural beauty–so stunning!
