Ladies Who Lunch

Instead of stressing out and back-posting, I’m just going to skip that week since I was on vacation and everyone deserves a break.

I had lunch today with a friend who I don’t meet with often, but when I do, I feel like I’m meeting with a life coach. I should pay her, she’s incredibly wise. It was so refreshing to hear from someone who’s literally writing her own destiny, moving to another country, and doing something entrepreneurial. How many women do you know who do that? None, right? I sat there inspired by how amazing she is.

Plus when I told her about my career, she got it. She completely understood how I could feel stuck, yet secure. It’s the risk-averse dilemma.

Must Watch TV

Forget everything I’ve written about reality TV. You must watch this 60 Minutes segment I saw during Thanksgiving weekend after the Broncos vs Chargers game on Sunday. It’s heartbreaking, yet inspiring and hopeful. I want to find the brother and sister featured and sponsor them. Despite their homeless situation, they’re unbelievably positive and resilient.

Hard Times Generation – 60 Minutes

Eternally Grateful

Thank you everyone for all of your thoughts, prayers, comments, text messages, emails for my mom. Looks like she had a mild heart attack, but her stress tests this morning turned out fine. For someone who hates taking medicine, my mom now has to take aspirin daily. She’s going in tomorrow for an echocardiogram. Hopefully that will turn out fine as well.

I had her review her family history with me and it looks like three family members (her brother, a nephew, and a niece) all died from heart attacks. I promptly scheduled the next available appointment for a physical and I want Dean to get himself checked out as soon as he’s back from NYC.

Scary stuff, but especially grateful this Thanksgiving for family, friends, health, and happiness. Thank you!

Pre-Thanksgiving Not So Good News

I found out the day before Thanksgiving that my mom had an abnormal electrocardiogram and will be going in to see a specialist on Tuesday. This wouldn’t be so worrisome if it weren’t for the fact that my mom’s brother died suddenly at the age of 40 and her nephew at 22 as a result of heart problems. Definitely put a big downer on my holiday especially since I’m spending time with my in-laws, which I enjoy, but I can’t stop thinking of my mommy. I couldn’t sleep last night even with an Ambien and considered doubling the dose given my anxiety. When I pray I very rarely ask for anything for myself. Usually I pray for others who are sick. Good health for my mom is the one thing I’ve asked for myself in years. If you could please keep my mom in your prayers too, she’s barely into her sixties with so much more life to experience. For anyone who’s laughed or cried or gleaned any bit of interest from my blog, please think of my mom who taught me so much, I would be eternally grateful.

Money Monday: Mint.com

How many of you are Mint.com users? It was one of those websites I signed up for early on, then forgot about. A friend of mine mentioned it recently which propelled me to give it another try.

Hands down, Mint is the best financial website out there. Gone are the days of tracking debits and credits in an Excel file. Mint aggregates all my balances in one place (my mortgage at Wells Fargo, my brokerage account at Schwab, my Chase credit card, my savings account at Navy Federal, my property value via Zillow). I can track all my transactions, figure out a budget, and see my net worth.

It’s pretty awesome. Check it out.

Power to the Middle Class

With all the ballyhoo going on with the Occupy movement, I honed in on an article in the University of Chicago magazine about the significant improvement in the lifestyle of the middle class and how that trend has been improving since the 1980s and that it continues its upward trajectory. You wouldn’t know it from all the negative press we’ve been reading.

Bruce Meyer, a professor at the Harris School of Public Policy, has proven the naysayers wrong. “The middle class is much better off than they were ten years ago, much better off than they were 30 years ago. That’s a message you don’t always hear.” According to his research, wages and consumption are both up over 50% between 1980 and 2009. That’s pretty impressive.

He adds, “We should be doing less hand wringing about the country falling apart. We should always be worried about our kids, but it doesn’t look like we’re going to leave them declining or worse living standards. We may leave them other problems, but this doesn’t look like it’s one of them.”

That’s something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving given that the price of turkey is up. Gobble, gobble.

Sunday in Oakland

We spent a fabulous Sunday in Oakland. We started out with a housewarming in a glorious loft with the hosts serving bacon, mac and cheese, scones, paella, and more, all home-made. YUMMY!!! Best housewarming ever. We followed that up with dinner at hotspot Plum restaurant. Prices were high considering their portions were pathetic. Won’t be going back there. Food was good, though. We ended with our favorite bar Van Kleef which is now open on Sundays. I always think of the luxury store Van Cleef & Arpels, but Van Kleef is more diamond in the rough.

Mark my words, Oakland is the place to be.

I did a quick Zillow search. Check it out: 2 bedroom, 2 bath, Lakeshore condo for less than $200k. Lakeshore! Give yourself a few years and you’ve got your home paid off! A Lakeshore condo home for $192,000. 1,000+ square feet plus parking. Jump on this, people!

Fashion Friday: Makeup

Did someone say makeup? You’re looking at it. Here’s a snapshot of my morning beauty regimen.

Contact solution for my contacts. That’s first.

SKII facial essence treatment is over-priced water, but it evens out my skin which is dry in some areas and oily in others. I love it. Best “lotion” ever.

Can’t live without a Tweezerman.

Yes, that’s a toothbrush – for the eyebrows.

Translucent powder I picked up from Nordstroms Rack.

Free Benefit blush thanks to Marc.

In the cup, there are lip glosses that are several years old and a black eyeliner from Sephora that must be at least 5 years old.

I am looking for sheer foundation if anyone has any recommendations.

Saturday Date Night

We got gussied up last night to stroll next door for dinner, then down a block to the theater. “How fun is this? This is where we live.”

We’ve been meaning to go to Fleur de Lys restaurant ever since we got a gift certificate for our wedding. Thanks Jen and Steve! But it’s not a place you can really make a last minute reservation at, so I finally snagged one for Saturday. I think the most surprising thing for me was walking in at 6pm to find the place packed, as in every seat taken. There was one section of the restaurant with two-tops and all of them were taken by married couples celebrating an anniversary.

It’s a 3, 4, or 5 course fixed-price menu. 3 courses was more than enough. What’s great about the menu is that you can choose each of your courses. I started with the foie gras torchon (duh), scallops sitting on top of pork belly, and lemon cheesecake. You think you’re done, then they bring out one last plate of assorted desserts (mini madeleines, tarts, gelees, and chocolate) which was crazy excessive because we could barely eat another bite. Beautiful restaurant to take your time and enjoy an amazing, special meal.

The musical Fela (pronounced Fay-luh) extended performances through the end of December. The NY Times review of the off-Broadway Fela was stellar so I jumped on front-row Loge section seats. Because who really reads the Chronicle reviews of anything. That’s like asking a kindegartner what they think of a show.

The musical is the story of Fela Kuti, a musician who dedicated his life to Nigeria’s liberation movement. I thought it was really powerful and the only show where I actually got up and danced. Yep, the whole audience got up and shook their booties. When have you ever seen that happen?

You Bore Me

It’s that time of year when you start thinking about gifts. I classify people into two groups—those who are easy to get presents for, and those who present a challenge when it comes to picking something they’d like.

The more I grappled with this classification, the more I realized that if it’s hard for people to get you a present (i.e, you tend to get candles or chocolate or a bottle of wine), then you’ve got to start working on your new year’s resolutions and becoming more interesting! Or at least more vocal.

The other day, Dean was on the phone with a friend who told him at the very end of their conversation that it was his birthday. He was clearly feeling sorry for himself and a little bummed that Dean didn’t remember. Ummm, how old are you? Take control of your own destiny. If you want to go out with the guys on your birthday, then plan the damn social event yourself! Don’t wait around and hope that someone will do something nice for you. Don’t you owe that to yourself? Making yourself feel good? It’s shocking how many people rely on others to pick them up.

Here it comes, the baby conversation. Yes I admit, I’m adverse to the baby talk. Why? Because I cannot stand women who wax on and on about their babies. The baby’s first step, the baby’s first tooth, the baby’s blah blah blah. What can you tell me about YOU?! What is interesting about you? Not your friggin baby. Your baby is not my friend. You are!

God, strike me down if I become one of those mothers, but I can’t imagine I would. I still plan on checking out the latest restaurants. Why wouldn’t I? I still plan on running races occasionally, going to the ballet, mapping out Litcrawl, going to wine country. Who said that when you become a mother that a new life begins and yours ends? Moms, stop the madness. Get your head out of the baby blogs and go to a bar. Yeah, a bar!

Which brings me back to people who lack passion in life. Do your friends know what your interests are? Do you speak about them to the world? Love your life so much that you can’t stop talking about all your great experiences. Gift yourself that.

And if it’s not abundantly clear by the way I lead my life, I covet award-winning fiction. I break out into song every time I see fur. I love vintage which means you can stop by the nearest Crossroads or Buffalo Exchange, pick up something that fits me, and 9 times out of 10, I’m going to love it. I collect colorful notebooks and bright scarves and handkerchiefs. And if all the above are too inconvenient, I’m a fan of any kind of pink flower. Oh and insects, I still love insects.
