Is it just a California thing? Doesn’t recycling reduce waste? Doesn’t it save money? Doesn’t it save the planet?
Reduce, reuse, recycle.
On my way to Burning Man, I made one last shopping stop at a Save Mart in Reno. I bought bread, chips, wine, soda, crackers, cookies. I swear to God the cashier put each item into a separate plastic bag. I had a freakout. Plastic? We don’t use plastic anymore! I guess we only care about the environment in California. I was shocked.
Now I’m in NYC and having an even bigger freakout that a major cosmopolitan city does not recycle. At all. Please anyone, pipe in and tell me I’m wrong. But I don’t see any recycle bins out on the street. Households, from what I can tell, dump everything in one trash can. Appalling. Aren’t there any green initiatives in this city?

Save Mart in Reno isn’t opposed to it, it seems they don’t have customers who ask. When I was there, I went to their produce department and asked for a box and then asked the cashier to pack up the groceries into it. No problem. I was also at some other discount food place in Reno, got some boxes from their wine section and did the same thing.
Not sure about the household recycling. Maria and Richard separate their recyclables from their trash but not sure what they do with it from there.
