Happy New Year!!! Sorry, I forgot to wish you all a Happy New Year. All of you out there. Who knows how many of you read this thing.
I rang in the new year in the Big Apple, my 2nd favorite place in the world next to home sweet home San Francisco. My mom said, “I looked for you on TV, but I didn’t see you.” I don’t know if she thought I’d be one of the revelers in Times Square or if she expected to see me streaking naked through the drizzle.
No, I wanted a tame celebration. I went to Sushi Samba with my b-school friends. I had a great time, exactly what a wanted. Not crazy, but festive…among good friends.
While in New York, I stayed with my college friend Shaheen. Shaheen is more like my sister than a friend. After five hours of flying and an hour on a shuttle, I walked through her front door, gave her a hug, and introduced myself to her friends. She didn’t offer me a drink or anything. Even her friends reprimanded her, “Shouldn’t you offer your friend something?”
She shook her head. “Oh, she knows where everything is!” As if on queue, I was already in the kitchen, raiding her stash of cookies.
God love Shaheen. I don’t think this girl has the word diet in her vocabulary—a great thing for someone like me. Her kitchen is stocked with cookies, chips, snack food, and regular soda. For breakfast every morning, we had Eggo waffles with butter and a layer of syrup!!! That was my favorite when I was a kid. I stopped eating them…back when I was a kid! Whereas Shaheen wakes up and pops two in her toaster every morning. God love her! In a world where everyone is so concerned with weight and dieting, Shaheen is a breath of fresh air.
New York, New York…ice-skating in Bryant Park, the MOMA, food glorious food, and the GSB network concentrated in one big city. Next time I go (soon, very soon), I’m there for a week.
